History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back Petersburg period of scientific-pedagogical activities of the D.A. Grave on ifferential geometry (To the 150-anniversary from birthday) Ignatushina I.V. Dmitry Aleksandrovich Grave is known primarily as the founder of a major school of algebra in our country. However, no small interest of his work on differential geometry. The paper describes the results of D.A. Grave, received in this area of mathematics at the end of XIX century. Particular attention is paid to his doctoral dissertation, «On the fundamental problems of the mathematical theory of the construction of maps», which was resolved a number of important problems in differential geometry. Thematically, she continued to study the Euler, Lagrange, Chebyshev, Korkin, Markov and Darboux of mathematical cartography. First of all, here Grave gave the answer to the question posed Korkin, the equivalent of finding a projection surface of the sphere to the plane in which all meridians and parallels depict straight lines or circles. Another valuable result of the Grave, set out in his dissertation, was proof of Chebyshev on selecting the best projection for the area ground. This paper contains a generalization of this proof, which Grave published later in French in «A generalization of the proof of Chebyshev's theorem». Additionally, the article provides a brief description of his teaching activities for teaching differential geometry of the material in the higher educational institutions of St. Petersburg.
