Biologist Turned Biotechnologist: M.M. Zavadovskii and the Creation
of the Method of Artificial Induction of Multifetation |
Belozerov O.P.
The prominent Soviet biologist and science manager M.M. Zavadovskii contributed to many fields of biology. Fascinated as a student with physico-chemical biology, later he switched over to endocrinology; having been in 1923–1927 the director of the Moscow Zoo he actively worked in the area of parasitology; in 1920s–1930s he formulated a number of theoretical generalizations including the conception of a new biological discipline called developmental dynamics of organism, and the principle of reciprocal action between endocrine glands. But the most fame he won for the creation of the method of hormonal induction of multifetation. This paper examines the milestones of the scientist's life with the special focus on the the prehistory and the origins of the above-mentioned method.
