Investigation of Nuclear Fuel and Structural Materials
in the RFT, MR and IR-8 Reactors |

The main directions of fuel compositions and structural materials in the RFT, MR, VVR-2 and IR-8 reactors are presented. In 1952 the RFT reactor, rigged out by loop installations, was put in operation to investigate nuclear compositions and structural materials of various nuclear power installations. During 1956–1961s in the RFT reactor more 20 in-pile examinations were carried out on the high temperature subject for flying nuclear power plants. Investigations of the UO2, UC2 fuel behavior and structural materials properties were carried out, using the MR and VVR-2 reactors. Design decisions and substantiation of the able to work main design elements of the thermo-electric and thermo-emission reactor-transformers-«Romashka» and «TOPAS» were utilized as well.
Instead of the RFT reactor in 1963 the multiloop MR reactor was put in operation. Experimental possibilities of this reactor had been enlarged due to put in operation
new loop installation with helium as coolant in addition to all the rest. Apart from other fuel tests considerable reactor investigations began were carried out with in-pile instrumented fuel.
Because of the MR reactor shut-down the experimental base for fuels and structural materials investigations was built up. During 2002–2012 s investigations of different fuel composition behavior and irradiation of structural material test samples as well had been carried out.
