INORGANIC POLYPHOSPHATES
AS UNIVERSAL REGULATORY
COMPOUNDS IN LIVING CELLS |

The article is devoted to research in biochemistry and cell biology of inorganic polyphosphates in IBPM RAS. These biopolymers are
reserves of phosphate and energy involved in the regulation of gene expression and stress adaptation in the cells of living organisms, from
bacteria to human. Long-term studies led by Corresponding Member of RAS I.S. Kulaev formed the concept of multiple localization and
functional signifi cance of these polymers in the microbial cell, including participation in the regulation of the biosynthesis of antibiotics, toxic
compounds tolerance and degradation of xenobiotics. Polyphosphates are involved in the cascade of blood coagulation, bone development and
signal transduction. Microorganisms are a good model for the study of metabolic pathways of these compounds in a changing environment.
