History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back THE STUDY OF THE ARCTIC’S ISSUES IN INSTITUTES OF THE SIBERIAN BRANCH OF RAS IN THE SECOND HALF OF XX–THE BEGINNING OF XXI CENTURES N.A. Kupershtokh The article deals with the history of creation of the Siberian Branch of the RAS’s institutions and their overall contribution to studying the Arctic region’s complex problem. The scientists of the SB RAS continued traditions of the Russian academy of science and during many decades accumulated the scientifi c data, realized monitoring of the unique natural events inherent only to the Northern territories. These researchers also took part in investigation of the largest mineral resource’s deposits and developed some new technologies for the Far North. The article considers activities of scientists from Novosibirsk (Institute of Geology and Geophysics and its successors – Trofi muk Institute of Petroleum- Gas Geology and Geophysics and Sobolev Institute of Geology and Mineralogy), Yakutsk (Diamond and Precious Metal Geology Institute, Institute of Oil and Gas Problems, Melnikov Permafrost Institute, Larionov Institute of Physical-Technical Problems of the North, Chersky Institute of Mining of the North), Tyumen (Institute of the Earth Cryosphere). The author comes to conclusion that cumulative knowledge potential of the SB RAS’ institutes on the complex problems of Arctic is becoming unique topical issue and therefore should be necessarily demanded by the state for implementation of development strategy of the Russian Arctic zone.
