History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back THE HISTORY OF THE AMPELOGRAPHICAL COLLECTION OF ALLRUSSIAN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF VITICULTURE AND WINEMAKING L.G. Naumova, V.A. Ganich French specialist – husbandman Rozier (1780) is considered to be the founder of collecting of grape varieties. He created the fi rst plan of collection of grape varieties with the aim of studying and ordering of their names. In the autumn of 1938 was the main grape collection of the Institute of 250 varieties was founded. The collection was greatly enriched in the period from 1948 to 1953. Due to the spread of the phylloxera in 1983-1985 new ampelographic collection of grafted seedlings was founded (pre-existing collection was own-rooted). Nowadays the collection has about 1200 varieties and forms of grapes. It contains such high-quality indigenous don varieties of grapes, as Sibirkovskiy, Kumshatskoy beliy, Tsimlyansky cherniy, Plechistic, Krasnostop zolotovskii, Maruskin, puhlyakovsky, etc. These varieties are the glory of the don wines and is known not only in our country but also abroad. In 1958–1971, expeditions were organized in the far Eastern taiga by seeds and cuttings of Amur grape. To identify the best forms of Vitis silvestris in 1970–1973 there were 6 expeditions in different areas of the North Caucasus and Transcaucasia. In recent years the collection has replenished with new varieties and forms of domestic and foreign selection, such as: Pamyati Kostrikina, Tsimlyanskaya Sergienko, Lyali Surkh gods Habib, the Marshalskiy, Losa goryanki, Pamyati Smirnova, Guzun, etc. Keywords: grapes; ampelography collection; grapes.
