PLASMA CHEMISRY: POLYMERS, BIOLOGY, MEDICINE |

Research and development of kinetic and mechanisms for low temperature plasma interaction with polymers as well as applications of plasma for polymer modification in biology and medicine conducted in the Branch of Talroze Institute for Energy Problems of Chemical Physics are described. The reaction products of plasma treatment for typical polymers (PE and PTFE) were studied depending on plasma gas, pressure and electrical parameters of the gas discharge. Based on this research some industrial scale technologies like plasma modifi cation of rubber articles; synthesis of polymerization and dimerization catalysts; vacuum ultraviolet modifi cation of artifi cial lenses were realized. Plasma chemical and photochemical processes have been used for improvement of biocompatibility as well as for functionalization and control of surface biological properties of medical polymers by means of immobilization of proteins, biologically active species or liquid crystal biosensors. Some aspects of plasma medicine – a new area integrating plasma chemistry and medicine – are considered. Low temperature plasma can control, stimulate, catalize and diagnose complicated biological processes in tissues and human body. Plasma treatment could provide therapeutic effect in tissue sterilization, wound healing and treatment of skin diseases.
