History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back ON THE HISTORY OF ACADEMIC PETROLOGICAL INVESTIGATION IN KAMCHATKA A.V. Koloskov Based on the analysis from published papers, the scientists of the Petrology laboratory from the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology FEB RAS considered the history of petrological investigations of igneous rocks of the Kamchatka region. We revealed three stages, which with some temporal adjustments, refl ect the process of igneous rocks investigation dynamics. I. 1959–1977, Geological and petrochemical formational stage. During this stage Kamchatka magmatism was studied on formational basis, using the simplest geology-petrochemical and pre-sounding mineralogical methods. II. 1977–1986. Geological and geochemical serial stage – During this stage igneous rocks of Kamchatka were typifi ed on serial basis using petrological, isotope-geochemical and mineralogical methods, also island-arc and intra-plate geochemical types were revealed. III. Since 1986 and until now. Isotope geochemical multi-component stage. Using petrological models scientists started to analyze multicomponent isotope geochemical systems involving different mantle reservoirs and estimating the contribution of various factors (assimilation, fractional crystallization, mixing) in the magma generation processes.
