History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back THE PIONEER OF DISCOVERY OF THE YAKUT DIAMONDS: TO THE 110TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTHDAY OF THE ACADEMICIAN VLADIMIR STEPANOVICH SOBOLEV N.A. Kupershtokh In May 2018, the scientifi c community celebrates the 110th anniversary of the birth of academician V.S. Sobolev (1908–1982). He is known as an outstanding scientist in the fi eld of mineralogy and petrography, the geology of diamond deposits. The article analyzes the biography and scientifi c activity of V.S. Sobolev in the European part of the USSR – in Leningrad and Lviv, as well as in Siberia. V.S. Sobolev worked at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (RAS) for more than two decades. The Siberian period of life was the period of the highest creative heyday for Vladimir Stepanovich Sobolev. Outstanding contribution of academician V.S. Sobolev in the development of basic research, study and development of the productive forces of the Siberian region, training of personnel received high public recognition.
