History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back THE ACTIVITIES OF CHAPLAINS THE BESIEGED FORTRESS OF PORT ARTHUR DURING THE RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR OF 1904–1905 O.A. Kurbatov The article deals with the activities of the military clergy of the 4th East Siberian rifle division stationed in the besieged fortress of port Arthur, as well as the clergy who are on the ships of the Russian squadron during the Russian-Japanese war of 1904–1905.the Material contained reveals the features of the pastoral service of priests among the personnel of the garrison of The fortress, located both on land and at sea, and the diffi culties they had to face. It is said that, despite the current difficult situation, the clergy carried out continuous pastoral activities during the hostilities, while showing miracles of heroism and courage. The author comes to the conclusion that in conditions of extremely bad for Russia, war, military chaplains were able to save the army from moral decline and prevented moral and religious decay of the troops, although most of the personnel, and was distinguished by a deep religiosity.
