History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back GOTTFRIED MERZBACHER ABOUT SETTLEMENTS AND DWELLINGS OF MOUNTAIN TATARS OF THE CAUCASUS А.М. Abaeva The article examines and analyzes reports of Gottfried Merzbacher about the settlements and dwellings of the mountain tatars of the second half of the XIX-th century. The material for this study was a two-volume work of a german climber «From the Highlands of the Caucasus» [1], which was the result of two scientific Merzbacher's expeditions. Despite the fact that the main purpose of the mountaineer's journey was to conquer the highest peak of Europe, mount Elbrus, during his stay in the Caucasus, the researcher collected valuable information about the peoples of the Caucasian highlands. The purpose of this study is inextricably linked with the need to replenish the sources of ethnography balkarians unknown earlier by the domestic caucasus studies of European travelers of the XIX century.
