SCIENCE AND OUTSIDER ART: THE CASE OF EUGENE GABRICHESKY (1893–1979) |

The article investigates the reflection of scientific knowledge and previous professional experience in the work of outsider artists, namely entomologist and geneticist Eugene Gabrichevsky (1893–1979). The discourse of outsider art was formed during the early XX century through of influence of many factors such as the development of interest to the psychoanalysis and the concept of the unconscious; the distinction between artistic culture and the inclusion in it the radical visual languages and meanings. The outsider art is mainly isolated from the dominant discourse of art. But outsiders can borrow for their works the most unexpected aspects of history or religion, surrounding everyday life or visual agitation; sometimes they, on the contrary, are focused on personal experiences, synthesizing images that therapeutically affect of their creators. The history of Eugene Gabrichevsky demonstrated the influence of various external fields and discourses on the phenomenon of outsider art. The work of art brut`s artists (one of the phenomena of outsider art) is usually described as a completely isolated phenomenon, something created in isolation from all external fields. Nevertheless, even prolonged isolation from the current field of scientific research, in the case of Eugene Gabrishvsky, this prior experience can be resolved, assimilation of motifs of entomologist and genetics observations in the images of creativity.
