History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back BIOGRAPHY RECONSTRUCTION OF V.M. DESYATNIKOV (PERIOD OF 1925–1933) A.R. Narskiy All-Russian (previously – All-Union) research Institute of aviation materials (VIAM), established in 1932 – is the largest material science enterprise with the status of the State scientifi c center of the Russian Federation. The history of VIAM is the formation and development of aviation materials science in our country – a complex scientific discipline that includes a wide range of scientific schools and areas. One of the little-studied issues in the history of the Institute are the biographies of its first leaders. They play a leading role in the organization and establishment of scientific and technical activities of VIAM in the 1930s, and, consequently, in the development of aviation materials science in our country. In the second cycle of articles about the chief of VIAM Vasily Matveevich Desyatnikov (1883–1953) the period of his life journey from 1925 to 1933 is considered. During this period, V.M. Desyatnikov held senior positions at various industrial enterprises and institutions: Technical and production Department of the Main Department of military industry, at the Kolomna machine-building plant, State aviation plant № 1 named after Aviachim, in the All-Union Association of the aviation industry. After graduating from the Higher academic courses at The people's Commissariat of heavy industry of the USSR in Moscow and obtaining a degree of mechanical engineer for the production of aircraft, Vasily Matveevich worked as head of the All-Union aviation trust of repair and spare production and led the liquidation Commission in his transfer from Leningrad to Moscow and "infusion" in a Special aviation trust. In 1933, V.M. Desyatnikov has been appointed head of VIAM. The article is based on archival documents of the Russian State Archive of the economy, the Russian State Archive of socio-political history, the Russian State Archive in Samara.
