History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back ACTIVITIES OF THE ORTHODOX MILITARY CLERGY ON THE EVE AND DURING THE RUSSIAN-JAPANESE WAR OF 1904–1905 O.A. Kurbatov Russian Orthodox military clergy in the Russian army on the eve and during the Russian-Japanese war of 1904–1905. The material reveals the features of the pastoral service of priests among the personnel and the difficulties they had to face. It is said that, despite the current difficult situation, the clergy conducted continuous pastoral activities during the fighting both on land and at sea, as well as in military hospitals. The author comes to the conclusion that in the conditions of an extremely unsuccessful war for Russia, military priests managed to save the army from moral decline and did not allow the religious and moral decomposition of the troops. We can say that the war brought up military priests of a "new type", who were able not only to "comfort" in the rear, but also to inspire soldiers directly on the battlefield.
