ALEXANDER IVANOVICH PETRUNKEVICH - RUSSIAN AMERICAN |
R.A. Fando
The article is devoted to the biography of the Russian scientist-emigrant Alexander Ivanovich Petrunkevich, the son of Ivan Ilyich Petrunkevich, the famous public figure. As a young man, he became interested in the taxonomy of beetles, then expanded his interests ‒ he worked with other Arthropods, including Arachnids. He graduated from Moscow University, after which he was forced to leave Russia in protest against the suppression of student unrest by the University administration. After leaving for Germany, he began an internship at the Freiburg’s University with the famous zoologist and evolutionist August Weismann. While studying in Germany, he met Wanda Hartshorn and married her. Even before the revolution, the scientist moved to the United States, taught for a long time at Yale University, was President of the Connecticut Academy of Artists and Scientists, founder of the Federation of Russian organizations in the United States. The main works are devoted to the taxonomy and paleontology of arachnids. In total, he published more than 100 works, described 92 species of Arachnids.
