Karpenko The stages of development of radio-ecological research addressed to the need to protect human beings and the environment in conditions of contamination of natural and agricultural ecosystems after nuclear tests, radiation accidents and operation of nuclear fuel cycle facilities are considered. The main pathways of radionuclide transfer in the environment and peculiarities of their behavior in the environment depending on the source of contamination, characteristics and composition of deposition are described. Major features of radioecological problems at the present stage and prospects of their solution in RIRAE are presented.
