Before the Chernobyl accident, international cooperation in the field of radioecological research was limited and was conducted mainly out in the framework of the USSR's contacts with the International Commission on Radiological Protection and the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation. The Chernobyl accident initiated the fast development of international cooperation with many countries, stimulated by the organization of many IAEA and European Commission projects. Bilateral contacts with scientists of the countries affected by the accident were also under active developed at that time. The staff of the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Radiology and Agroecology (RIRAE) took the most active part in this cooperation. Since 2011, RIRAE has been providing technical and advisory support to mitigate the consequences of the accident at Fukushima Daiichi the field of agricultural radiology and remediation of affected areas. The Institute is actively involved in international cooperation aimed at deployment of nuclear technologies in agriculture, developing methods and tools for environmental monitoring and emergency response.
