The article is devoted to the research in the fi eld of xenobiotic degradation by microorganisms and their enzyme systems, conducted by the team of the Laboratory of enzymatic degradation of organic compounds of the IBPM RAS from the moment of its formation (1980) to the present time. Over the years of the laboratory’s activity, the promising bacterial and fungal cultures able to efficiently degrade xenobiotics were identifi ed and selected, their biodegradative potential was studied, the microorganism cultivation conditions were optimized, the possible biodegradation and biotransformation pathways of xenobiotics were established, the methods for enzyme purifi cation were developed, the enzymes catalyzing conversion of xenobiotics were isolated and comprehensively studied, the structure of a number of the enzymes-destructores was solved and their catalytic mechanisms were investigated, as well as the genes and gene clusters encoding the enzymes, involved in the pathways of xenobiotic degradation, were identified.
Keywords: xenobiotics, aromatic compounds, biodegradation, biotransformation, cultivation, bacteria, fungi, heterogeneity of the population, enzymes, structure and function, gene clusters.
