History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back THE HISTORY OF STUDYING THE FLORA OF THE CITY OF MOSCOW A.N. Shvetsov Flora of the city is a new direction of research of modern Russian floristry. The analysis of the evolution of the views of researchers on the urban landscape as an object of research and the main components of its vegetation cover – aboriginal, adventive and cultivated plant species. In Russia, proposals for studying the natural environment of the city, i.e. the study of it as an object of special research should be attributed to the beginning of the 20th century, when the goals were identified and the research methodology was developed. The active implementation of projects for the study of urban flora began in the 1970–1980s. The analysis of the structure of herbarium collections from the territory occupied by modern Moscow was carried out, the time dynamics of herbarium collections, their distribution over the historical zones of the city, the degree and completeness of the survey of its territory were revealed, and the main collectors of the Moscow flora were identified.
