GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH OF THE RUSSIAN LAPLAND IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY: EXPEDITIONS BY A.F. GOEBEL (1868–1870) AND D.K. KIEL (1872) – THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO GEOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE |
M.N. Petrovskiy
The presented article is devoted to one of the little-studied pages of the development of the Russian North in the second half of the 19th century – the history of geological study of the Russian Lapland by expeditions of 1868–1870 and 1872. These expeditions were to lay the scientifi c foundation for the development of the local mining industry. The main organizer and inspirer of "exploratory geognostic-mineralogical" research was the curator of the Mineralogical Museum of the Imperial Academy of Sciences A.F. Goebel. Based on numerous sources, most of which are being introduced into scientifi c circulation for the first time, the article examines the biographies of expedition participants and persons involved in their organization; describes the history of organizing and conducting expeditions; an analysis of the results obtained and their contribution to geological knowledge about Russia is given. The first part of the article discusses: the biography of A.F. Goebel, the events preceding the organization of the expedition, and the biography of the chief financier of the 1868 expedition – H.J. Pallisen.
