History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back FORMATION OF THE GAS TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE OF EUROPE AND THE ROLE OF RUSSIA IN ITS FUNCTIONING I.I. Khasanov The article assesses the current state of the gas transportation system of European countries. The state of the gas production industry in the Netherlands and Norway was considered, the reasons for the import of natural gas by European countries were identified, and the role of Russian exports to Western European countries and the advantages of the Nord Stream project in the European gas transport infrastructure were assessed. The key stages of the formation of the gas industry, which infl uenced the development of the infrastructure of the main gas transportation, are considered, the current state of underground gas storages (UGS) in a number of European countries is given. The main attention is paid to the issues of ensuring the energy supply of the European Union and meeting the growing needs of European countries in the import of natural gas.
