BALLISTOCARDIOGRAPHY: FROM THE PAST TO THE FUTURE |
E.M. Kaganovich, E.V. Panova, I.L. Privalova
The objective of the study is to trace the course of development, extinction and new rise of one of the methods based on registration of mechanical manifestations of cardiovascular system activity. The problem of the extinction of ballistocardiography, a non-invasive method of cardiac activity study based on recording the body movements caused by blood release during cardiac cycle, is considered in this article. The factors and circumstances that led to the gradual loss of interest in this method are considered. In addition, the historical stages of improvement in the construction of ballistocardiographs and techniques of ballistocardiographic studies are described. The article also describes new technological developments in ballistocardiography. Emphasis is placed on the revival of interest in this method, which allows in vivo continuous monitoring of vibrations caused by the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Therefore, ballistocardiography has prospects for use for non-invasive monitoring in home electronic medical systems and personalised medicine. As a result, it is determined that further study of the physiological basis of ballistocardiography is important at present, as the available knowledge has been obtained using outdated equipment.
Keywords: ballistocardiography, biomedical measurements, cardiac signal analysis, cardiovascular monitoring, non-invasive monitoring, haemodynamics.
