History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back MECHANICS O.I. SOMOV A.O. Yulina Somov Osip Ivanovich left a rich scientific heritage in mathematics and mechanics. In theoretical mechanics, he is one of the founders of the general analytical method for setting and solving fundamental problems of kinematics and dynamics. He performs these tasks superbly, using integral and differential calculus, the apparatus of the theory of elliptic functions, and vector analysis. Somov considers all questions of mechanics in close connection with mathematics. His fundamental works brilliantly show how mathematical analysis helps to reveal the laws of motion and action of the forces of nature, on the one hand, and on the other hand, how mechanics helps the development of analytical and geometric methods of research. However, the works of Academician Somov are undeservedly forgotten. Therefore, in this work I will try to fill this gap. Keywords: O.I. Somov, theoretical mechanics, mathematical analysis.
