History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back TO THE QUESTION OF THE EMERGENCY ASCENT OF SUBMARINES FROM UNDER THE ICE B.V. Krutykh When considering the peculiarities of submarine navigation under the ice of the Arctic, it is necessary to consider the issue of options for emergency ascent. The main danger very often lies in the impossibility of timely surfacing of the submarine to the surface in an emergency (fire, water ingress, deterioration of the radiation situation), and it is this maneuver that largely decides the outcome of the struggle for the ship. As soon as possible, it is necessary to determine whether the submarine can quickly find or create, by any means, a polynya for surfacing. Of course, such a polynya may also be required for firing missiles from submarine missile carriers when there is no natural polynya, and time is running out. The article attempts to evaluate the process of development of means for emergency ascent of submarines from under the ice. Based on a historical analysis of the activities of submarines of the US Navy (Great Britain) and the Soviet Navy (RF).
