Tyutyunnik A brief biography of the outstanding French chemist and technologist Henri Moissan is presented, and the results of his work on the isolation of fluorine in pure form, the production of silicon carbide (muassonite), the invention of the electric arc muffle furnace and his attempts at high-temperature synthesis of diamond are reviewed. Full details of all of Moissan’s Nobel Prize nominations in chemistry are given. An overview of the exhibits at the Moissan Museum in Paris is given.
