The article is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Nikolai Ivanovich Grishin who was the world-famous expert on noctilucent clouds. The paper describes his unusual life path, scientifi c and organizational achievements. The further development of his ideas and approaches is also discussed: organizing systematic monitoring of noctilucent clouds and their fi lming, the idea of the infl uence of weather conditions in the lower atmosphere on the formation of noctilucent clouds, the hypothesis of the existence of clouds, similar to noctilucent clouds, in the Mars’ atmosphere.
