History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back History of the Origin of Production of Ferroalloys in Electric Furnaces (the 115th Anniversary of Ferroalloy Production in Russia) Shkirmontov A.P. On August 19, 1910, the fi rst plant in Russia for the production of ferroalloys in electric furnaces was officially opened, which is located in the Southern Urals, near the city of Satka. The ferroalloy plant “Porogi” belonged to the joint-stock company “Ural Electrometallurgical Partnership of Count A.A. Mordvinov, Countess E.A. Mordvinova, Baron F.T. Ropp and Engineer A.F. Shuppe” The smelter was equipped with electric furnaces from Héroult, France. The furnaces were powered directly by a 560 kW hydroelectric generator with an alternating current frequency of 25 Hz, using a transformer-free circuit. 255–280 tons of ferrosilicon, 280–320 tons of carbon ferrochrome and other alloys were smelted per year. In 1931–1934, the fi rst ferroalloy plants were built in Chelyabinsk, Zestafoni and Zaporozhye with the involvement of foreign specialists and imported electrical equipment and equipped with powerful electric furnaces of various designs. In Chelyabinsk, the capacity of round furnaces for ferrosilicon and ferrochrome was 7.8 MVA (”Siemens-Schuckkert” company, Germany). In Zaporozhye, the plant was equipped with Miguet furnaces 13.7 MVA (”Miguet-Perron” company, France) for smelting ferrosilicon; in Zestafoni, 7.5 MVA furnaces with a rectangular bath (”Siemens” company, Germany) for smelting manganese alloys.
