The personality B.S. Gorobets Еvgenii Lifshits is known, first, as co-author of Lev Landau of the world-known Course of theoretical physics consisting of 10 volumes. Secondly, he is known owing to his work as leading editor of Journal of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (JETP). Thirdly, he is known to specialists due to a few brilliant original results in physics. Having been couvered by Landau’s shadow, a myth was born as if Lifshits had had no origin ideas, but only wrote down Landau’s ones. However Lifshits’s original oeuvre entered the classics of theoretical physics. One may even daresay that these papers would have nowadays been sufficient for a dozen of doctorate theses. Part I treates the pre-war period of forming the Lifshits’s personality, to begin with his childhood in Kharkov, his making the acquaintance of Landau, becoming his closest friend and, finally, leaving Kharkov for Moscow following Landau. Part II treats Lifshits’s scientific oeuvre, his work as the deputy editor-in-chief of JETP, and writing of the 10 volumes of the Course by Landau-Lifshits-Pitaievskii.
