Artem I. Alikhanyan (1908–1978). Scientific portrait |
G.I. Merzon
Academician of Armenian Academy of Sciences and Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Artem Alikhanyan was one of the pioneers in the fields of nuclear physics, physics of cosmic rays, and high-energy physics in our country. He is well-known as a famous researcher and an outstanding manager in science. He has founded Yerevan Physical Institute, two high-mountain cosmic-ray stations “Aragats” and “Nor-Amberd” in Armenia. He has constructed the 6-GeV Yerevan electron ring accelerator. In 1960–1970, he has founded Nor-Amberd schools of physics well-known throughout the world. In Moscow, A.I. Alikhanyan has organized a laboratory in the Lebedev Physical Institute and cathedra of nuclear physics in Moscow Engineering-Physics Institute. He has developed new experimental methods such as magnetic spectrometers for cosmic-ray studies, wide-gap spark chambers in magnetic field, and the method for identifying relativistic charged particles according to their X-ray transition radiation in layered regular and irregular media.
Key words: high-mountain cosmic-ray stations “Aragats” and “Nor-Amberd” in Armenia, the 6-GeV Yerevan electron ring accelerator, elementary particle laboratory, wide-gap spark chambers in magnetic field, transition radiation detectors for identifying relativistic charged particles
