History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back Piotr L. Kapitsa summoned to «Lubianka» (Ministry of Interior Affairs – NKVD): worn myth and a first non-contradictory version of Landau’s liberation in 1939 B.S. Gorobets In april 1939, P. Kapitsa, summoned to NKVD on Lubianka-square wаs arguing with the highest commissars (generals) of NKVD acting on behalf of their narcom L. Beria, if it was possible to set free L. Landau. Several years after Kapitsa’s death (in 1984), the closest relatives and collaborators of Kapitsa: his wife, sons, physicists professors I. Khalatnikov, E. Feinberg published the basic version of the event. According to it Kapitsa managed to persuade the Beria’s commissars that Landau could not have any motives to be German spy. Kapitsa even has written vouch for Landau. Still this myth is inadequate, for no one document in Landau’s dossier accused Landau as German spy. At the same time, the narrators do not even mention the most grave crime committed by Landau against the Stalinist regime – edition of a leaflet which urged to overthrow this regime, called as fascist.
