History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back State Radium Institute – a Multi-Research Center. The Initial Period of the Radium Institute (1922–1945) V.N. RomanovskyE.A. Shashukov There are considered the initial stages of Institute’s works in the fields of radiochemistry, nuclear physics, and radiogeochemistry in a period before the Great Patriotic War (1922–1941) and during the War (1941–1945). The world-known radiochemical school headed by V.G. Khlopin was formed just in this period. The school of radiogeochemists, led by V.I. Vernadskiy was advanced in the given period, as well as the school of nuclear physicists, headed by L.V. Mysovskiy. There are also noted such Institute’s achievements in this period, as V.G. Khlopin’s law discovery, determination of geological formation age, research in cosmic rays, creation and use of cyclotron which was the first in Europe, opening of spontaneous uranium fission.
