Alahverdiev, L.G. Alahverdieva, A.A. Abumuslimov The author gives a brief account of toponymiec studies in historico-geographical literature of the past. Place-namen often point to the changes of natural complexes caused by man, but they demonstrate rather seldom the reorganization of those complexes caused by physio-geographic or geological processes. Place-names of Chechen republic keep valuable evidence of the past natural conditions. The toponymic method helps to reconstruct landscapes of the past, but like any other method, it is limited and must be combined with the paleogeographic research methods to give the convincing proofs of the past natural complexes.
