HISTORY OF FORMATION, DEVELOPMENT AND UTILIZATION OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT ABOARD SURFACE WARSHIPS OF THE RUSSIAN NAVY DURING THE PERIOD OF 1869–1889
P.E. Valivach

Main stages of formation and utilization of electrical lighting equipment aboard warships of the Russian Navy are determined. It is stated that the first warships that used new lighting apparatus were «Izhora» and «Ilmen».
In 1869 tests with Foucault-Dyubosk electric lamps were conducted for the first time onboard «Ilmen» (a steamship, two guns, built in Belgium in 1852) and «Izhora» (a steamship, two guns, built in England in 1861). Jules Dyubosk (1817–1886) designed the electro-magnetic regulator for Leon Foucault lamp. “Spherical cathadioptrical reflector” invented by colonel Mangin in 1876 made it possible to widely use it onboard warships. Since 1878 P.N. Yablochkov candles were used in the Navy for battle illumination and navigational lights. Years of emperorship of Alexander III are mostly characterized by the fact that he paid special attention to rebirth of the Black Sea Fleet. Since 1882 A.N. Ladygin incandescent lamps were used onboard ships of the Russian Navy. At the same time during the campaign of 1882 Edison lamps were tested onboard the ships of the mine unit (frigate «Admiral Lazarev» and clipper «Zhemchug»).
Comparative tables are presented with data on voltage and input current consumed aboard most powerful warships of that time. The role of Russian scientists in the field of electrical engineering such as V.N. Chikolev, P.N. Yablochkov, A.N. Lodygin, M.O. Dolivo-Dobrovolski and navy officers: E.P. Tveritinov, lieutenants Kolokoltsev and Lozinski are emphasized. Unique historical material of the Russian State Archive of the Navy is presented.
Hence within the said two decades main attention in provision of ships of the Russian Navy with electrical equipment was paid to technical aids for battle illumination and DC power sources
Key words: history, electrical equipment, warships, Russian Navy, electric light, dynamo.
