History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back TRAFFIC ROUNDABOUT DESIGN EVOLUTION Y.H. Yusupova The history of roundabouts totals already several hundreds of years. No traffic rules still existed those days. The first state, which has accepted the priority of the incoming roundabout flow were the United States of America. Since 60th the version of traffic organization has changed so that the annular flow starts to take the priority. Mini-roundabouts and single-lane roundabouts get spread. It would seem that planning schemes have been modified and tested repeatedly during the centuries-old period of roundabout existence. However, the development of roundabout projecting as well as the search for new design solutions and versions of traffic organization continue at the present time. Most recently the «flower» type of roundabout was presented in Slovenia, while a turbo-roundabout – in the Netherlands. In our country, such roundabouts are also in demand, but poorly studied. The increase of motorization level requires new types of crossings, as built a few decades ago, they no longer meet the parameters of traffic flow. Much attention should be paid to new roundabout types which have established themselves abroad.
