History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back Works on the Problem of the Asteroid-Comet Hazard Performed in IAA Medvedev Yu.D. Shor V.A. The most urgent challenges which arise when solving the problem of asteroid-comet hazard are considered. A review of works carried out within the frames of this problem in the Institute of Applied Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences is given. It is noted that research on this problem is an important part of the scientific activity of the Institute, it is included into the annual scientific plans and is actively developed by staff of IAA. At present, a project of creating an information center, whose tasks include the collection and processing of optical and radar observations of small Solar system bodies, the determination of their orbits and the estimation of the impact hazard of discovered bodies with the Earth, the Moon and the other major planets and their satellites is developing in the Institute. This center should be an important element of the Russian information and analytical center on the asteroid-comet hazard, which must co-operate closely with foreign centers on the problem.
