History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back Kazan Physical-Mathematical Society as a Mathematical Center at the Turn of XIX–XX Centuries Tsaritsanskaya Yu.Yu. This work is devoted to research of scientific, organizing and educational activity of the Kazan physical and mathematical society at the end of XIX–the beginning of XX centuries. Having allocated in 1890 from structure of Society of naturalists at the Kazan university, by the end of the XIX century physical and mathematical society got the status of the international scientific center. Society became the organizer of centenary celebration of N.I. Lobachevsky in 1893, and the founder of the Lobachevsky prize in 1896. The celebrations connected with opening of a monument to N.I. Lobachevsky, were the cause for the carrying out convention of mathematicians devoted to the organization and realization of the first international mathematical congress. Participants of society were engaged in development of a number of the modern European directions of researches. Besides, members of the Kazan physical and mathematical society took part in the international projects on compiling abstract journals and bibliographic indexes of mathematical literature. The formation of scientific authority of the Kazan physical and mathematical society was essentially influenced by vigorous activity of its president – the Kazan mathematician A.V. Vasiliev.
