History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back On the Different Periods in the Newest History of Geology in Belarus’ Makhnach A.A. Two periods are clearly seen in the development of geology in Belarus’: (1) 1945–1990, i.e. the period before the «perestroika» (reorientation of the USSR headed by Gorbachev) and (2) 1991 – up to this time, i.e. post-«perestroika» period. In all the republiks of the former USSR the first period was «the gold half a centuary of the Soviet geology». It was caracterised by impetous development of regional geologic field surveing resulting in discoveries of a lot of deposits of mineral ressources, metallic as well as non-metallic ones. In particular, in Belarus’ were found enormous potassium deposits, significant oil deposits, iron-ores, rare-metal ores, bauxites, gyps, oil-shales, brown coal. The second period is caracterised by cutting down of regional reconnaissance works for minerals and fundamental scientific researches, by intense exploitation of the known deposits, and by absence of any significant geological occurences. The lesson of the presented picture of the periodisation of the belorussian geology is as follows: No large regional geologic works means no discoveries of mineral deposits.
