History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back The Outstanding Russian Physicist A.G. Stoletov and his Contribution to the Creation of International Units of Electrical Quantities Trunov G.M. The paper shows that, thanks to the active participation Russian physicist A.G. Stoletov in the work of the 1st International Congress of Electricians (Paris, 1881), it were taken important decisions: 1) to adopt electrostatic system CGSE and electromagnetic system CGSM that were developed by the Committee the British Association and absolute practical system of electrical units, including such units as ohm, volt, ampere and other units; 2) to provide unit of resistance (the ohm) by mercury column of the certain length and cross-section 1 mm2 at temperature 0 ° C, and to define the ampere as «the current produced in a conductor with a 1-ohm resistance when there was a potential difference of 1 volt between its ends»; 3) to charge the International commission of units with determination of relation between electromagnetic and electrostatic units with high accuracy, using all the resources of modern science. All these well-thought and formulated by A.G. Stoletov solutions allowed to make big step in the study of electricity and magnetism and contributed to further the creation of the International System of Units (the SI).
