History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back ALL-RUSSIAN COLLECTION OF MICROORGANISMS: THE WAY TOWARD BIOLOGICAL RESOURCE CENTER L.I. Evtushenko W.I. Golubev S.M. Ozerskaya A.P. Sokolov L.V. Kalakoutskii G.K. Scryabin Institute of Biochemistry and Physiology of Microorganisms of the Russian Academy of Sciences – one of the leaders in microbiological and biotechnological research in this country – celebrates its 50th anniversary in June 2015. Since its creation until the present time the Institute operates as a diversifi ed scientifi c organization, whose main objective is the study of microbial biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, and genetics, as well as research into microbial diversity and the biosphere role of microorganisms. One of the most important tasks of the Institute is the development of effective microbial-based biotechnologies for medicine, agriculture, environmental protection and restoration. The Institute has played an important role in the organization of the microbiological industry in this country, and its establishment as an independent branch, and remains one of the largest centers of national microbial biotechnology. This article contains general data on the history of the Institute and its organizers, the main results of fundamental research and development of biotechnological processes based on the use of microorganisms. The author hopes that this information will promote cooperation of the Institute with other scientifi c, educational, and industrial organizations. Keywords: G.K.
