History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back THE FORGOTTEN NAME IN THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE (TO THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF N.A. SAPOGOV) R.A. Melnikov, O.A. Savvina In 2015 there is the 100th anniversary of the mathematician and the front-line soldier (participant in the Great Patriotic War of 1941– 1945) Nikolay Alexandrovich Sapogov (1915–1983), who was the successor of Petersburg mathematical school founded by P.L. Chebyshev. Unfortunately, the name of this talented mathematician is practically never mentioned in the studies of history of mathematics. The article restores rare facts of the scientist’s biography and his creative activity in mathematics, he had got weighty results in the theory of probability (formulation of the central boundary theorem for heterogeneous Markov’s series; the simple method of demonstration of multi-measured central boundary theorem, etc.), the theory of functions (approximation of continued functions by linear operators and estimation of their norms, generalization of Lozinsky-Kharshiladze theorem, etc.) and the theory of series (the new indication of tallying was suggested). N.A. Sapogov paid much attention to the problems of perfecting mathematical education of future engineers and took part in creating educational literature in mathematics for the students of technical higher education institutions.
