Tatarintseva M.P.
Old Believers in Tuvais a normal phenomenon, they were the pioneers at the end of the XIX century seeking for the permanent residence
in Uriankhai region that had been completely unknownto the Russian people searching for free land and independence from secular and
ecclesiastical authorities. Hardworking and enterprising, they were able to adapt to new conditions, to establish relations with local authorities,
to settle in compact in villages and towns founded by them, to have strong self-suffi cient farms. Despite the distance from the metropolis and
semi-subsistence farming, their aspiration to isolation from «the world», they managed to keep the old faith and to educate the next generations
in it, to arrange the differences among some of its tendencies, to consolidate and survive under aggressive atheist state policy in the Soviet era.
It is thanks to «closure» of Old Believers thatarchaic relic features of traditional Russian culture and lifecould be preserved in their everyday
and spiritual culture.
Keywords: migration in search of Belovodye; economic self-suffi ciency; strength of old faith; opposition to onslaught of atheism;
