History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back SCIENTIFIC SCHOOLS IN RADIO ENGINEERING AND RADIO ELECTRONICS N.S. Altshuler, A.L. Larionov, A.V. Kessenikh We consider the sources and the process of formation of the Kazan scientifi c school of magnetic radio spectroscopy associated with the discovery of EPR by E.K. Zavoiskii. Affected by some characteristic of this scientifi c school and scientifi c achievements of six departments of the Kazan State University’s Department of Physics, a number of Problem laboratory of physical, chemical and geological faculties of Kazan University, a few research laboratories Kazan Physical-Technical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences (RAS), the laboratories of the Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry, and other educational and scientifi c institutions of Kazan. Gradually the infl uence of magnetic radio spectroscopy Kazan school was to go beyond the region and has acquired international signifi cance. After the Jubilee conference in 1969 Kazan became one of the largest world centers of EPR, NMR, NQR, and quantum acoustics, and other related areas. The root element of the Kazan school served as Department of Physics at Kazan University, and soul and organizer of educational and research programs was Professor Semen Aleksandrovich Al’tshuler. Played an important role in the functioning of the school his colleague Boris Mikhailovich Kozyrev, many pupils ‘fi rst wave’ (B.I. Kochelaev, A.R. Kessel, N.S. Garifyanov, A.I. Rivkind, I.V. Ovchinnikov, M.M. Zaripov, M.A. Teplov, I.A. Safi n, B.Z. Malkin and et al.). From the students ‘second wave’ stood out, V.D. Skirda, M.V. Eremin, M.S. Tagirov, D.A. Tayurskii, A.V. Aganov who held long time the post of dean of the physics department at KSU, and many others. Kazan school has made a signifi cant contribution to the solution of many problems of condensed matter physics, chemistry and other sciences.
