History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back INSTRUMENTAL MEASUREMENTS OF THE TSUNAMI AT THE COAST AND IN THE DEEP OCEAN G.V. Shevchenko, D.P. Kovalev, P.D. Kovalev, T.N. Ivelskaya IMGG FEB RAS conducted pioneering study on the long waves instrumental measurements in the range of periods of the tsunami in the area of South Kuril Islands since the mid-1960s, ceased in the 1990s. This study was resumed after the strong Simushir earthquake and tsunami of November15, 2006. In the late 2009, Roshydromet has deployed a network of telemetric recorders of Tsunami Warning Service. The results of the analysis of a number of tsunami records, obtained in recent years, including dangerous 27.02.2010 Chilean and of 11.03.2011 the Tohoku tsunami are presented in the paper. An analysis of tsunami records allowed to reveal the important features of the spatial distribution of amplitudes and periods of tsunami-caused oscillation prevailing in different parts of the Pacifi c coast of Russia, to assess the role of source directivity and local frequency-selective properties of the areas, to develop a numerical model adequately reproduce the distribution of the real tsunamis.
