History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back KRAEVITCH’S TEXTBOOK ON PHYSICS TO THE SESQUICENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY OF PUBLISHING M.A. Brazhnikov The article is devoted to the publication the textbook on physics written by prof. K.D. Kraevitch for secondary school, which played a signifi cant role in physical education in Russia for three quarters of a century. Some facts of biography of Prof. Kraevitch as well as his scientifi c and pedagogical activity are considered in the view of their infl uence on creation of a textbook and its features. These facts are the following studying at the Main Pedagogical Institute of St. Petersburg, friendship and scientifi c cooperation with D.I. Mendeleeff, discussion on rarefied gases behaviour with A.G. Stoletoff, the publication of scientific papers in international journals, many years’ experience in teaching physics in secondary and higher schools of Russia and so on. The structure of the textbook content, the principles of its construction, examples of the illustrations are presented, as well as the development class-room demonstrations, the textbook is based on, is analysed at a concrete example. The principles of the selection of physics content for secondary school proposed by prof. Kraevitch are discussed. In the article, it is pointed out the importance of the Kraevitch’s textbook on physics for modern education and possible lines of investigation in this fi eld.
