History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back SIX DECADES OF ACADEMIC SCIENCE IN SIBERIA: SIBERIAN BRANCH OF THE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF USSR DURING THE SOVIET PERIOD N.A. Kupershtokh In May 2017, the scientifi c community will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS). SB RAS is largest territorial branch. Foundation of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of USSR (Russian Academy of Sciences) was one of the phenomena in the history of Russian science in the XX. The purpose of the article is to summarize the problems and achievements of academic science in Siberia during the Soviet period. The reasons and history of creation in a short time a major research center in the east of the country are considered. The main achievements of academic science in Siberia in the Soviet period are: the formation of research teams capable to carry out both basic and applied research at world level; the foundation of regional centers well integrated in the Academy of Sciences and in the regional scientifi c potential; the formation of scientifi c and educational centers for the training of highly qualifi ed personnel. The results of activities of the Siberian Branch of Academy of Sciences of USSR (Russian Academy of Sciences) as a system of nine research centers organized on the principles of coordination, integration and interdisciplinarity.
