History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back STRENGTHENING MILITARY-POLITICAL POSITIONS OF RUSSIA IN THE CONTEXT OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE SYRIAN CRISIS M.G. Kabasakalova Russia is one of the key players, having impact on the confl ict settlement in the Syrian Arab Republic. The complicated Syrian crisis, despite the losses of Russia, became a kind of opportunity for it to strengthen its military and political positions in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern (especially its northwestern part) regions. This was based on the expansion of the Russian logistics center in the Syrian port of Tartus and the deployment of Russian military aviation forces in the military base of Khmeimim. The both military bases played a key role in the Russia’s struggle against the terrorist groups in Syria. The military operation of the Russian Aerospace Forces in Syria was conditioned by the necessity to protect the national interests of the Russian Federation and to minimize the threats of the international terrorism (in the context of this crisis). This operation made it possible to turn the tide in favor of the Syrian government forces, and, being correspond with the international law, it was a step for prevention the West’s and the US’ policy of forcibly displacing the legitimate Syrian government. So, it was actually aimed at protecting the existing international order. Besides, Russia displayed its ability and readiness to accept the independent decisions and to infl uence the formation of a global architecture of the international relations.
