KAMCHATKA VOLCANOLOGICAL STATION, ITS ACTIVITY IN 1935–2015 |
N.A. Zharinov
This paper provides information on the history of formation, evolution and objectives of the Kamchatka Volcanological Station in the first decades after the station's foundation and in the following years. The main activity was related to the study of eruptive products, monitoring of eruptions, study of their nature and types. After the foundation of the Institute of Volcanology in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, the station began to conduct researches associated with the assessment of the state of volcanoes and prediction of volcanic activity. The paper highlights investigations related to ground deformations on volcano's slopes in connection with their activity over time, and provides estimates on the volume of erupted products. Special attention is given to the study of the growth of extrusive domes on Bezymyannyi and Shiveluch volcanoes and their 1956 and 1964 eruptions that produced catastrophic consequences. Results of investigations indicate intensified activity of the studied volcanoes in certain phases distinguished within the 18,6-year lunar cycle.
Keywords: Kamchatka Volcanological Station; the Klyuchevskoy group of volcanoes; eruptions; deformation; extrusions; prediction of volcanic eruptions.
