Petrovskaya The Kola region study history is one of the most impressive pages in the life of the Russia. It is inextricably linked with the Russian North development history. The three large periods In the history of geological and geographical studies of the Kola Peninsula are distinguished. The XII century – the first quarter of the XVIII century was a pre-scientifi c period in the knowledge of the Kola North. This was a time of initial knowledge accumulation. The second quarter of the XVIII century – the fi rst quarter of the 20th century was the time of sporadic scientific research. The first quarter of the XX century – the present time is the period of active, purposeful comprehensive scientific research of the Kola Peninsula. The article presents the historical picture of the fi rst period representing discovery, acquaintance and first steps in the knowledge of the Kola North by Russian people.
