History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back SHUKHOV’S INNOVATIVE GENIUS S.V. Sergeev, E.V. Minina The article is timed to the 165th anniversary of the great Russian engineer Vladimir Grigoryevich Shukhov (1853–1939) and considers his designs from the point of view of innovative development. It have been analyzed not only the technical novelty of such well-known Shukhov’s projects as cylindrical tanks for storing oil and oil products, oil barges, instalation for fractional distillation of oil, but also the results of their introduction into production. Some of Shukhov’s designs were ahead of their time, and their innovative component was realized much later. The most striking example is cracking technology, as well as Shukhov's methods of oil lifting - an inertial pump and airlift. Some examples of modern innovative developments (rodless pump, gas lift) that develop Shukhov's ideas are given. Among the most important Shukhov's inventions are lattice metal coatings and metal structures based on hyperboloid construction. There are some examples of using these Shukhov’s developments in modern architecture, earthquake-resistant construction, and also in the space industry. Keywords: V.G.
