METALLIC HYDROGEN IS A REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT OF PHYSICS OF HIGH PRESSURE |

The basic principles of band structure theory which allow to explain the effect of high pressure on the structure of crystals (e.g. solid xenon, iodine) are given. The physical statements and constructions of Bridgman anvils, diamond anvils are described. These instruments are used to obtain high pressure in the laboratory conditions. The physicochemical properties, types and methods of faceting of diamonds are told. The achievements of physics of high pressure (synthesis of diamonds, research of transitions, polymorphism of ice, the problem of metallic hydrogen, the usage of high pressure in geophysics and planetology) are discussed.
